Top 5 Songs of 2009 (so far)

I made a game attempt last night of creating my first podcast for a paid blog site that is currently in limbo. So, in that event that said podcast remains on my hard drive and never to be heard in cyberspace, I will use this opportunity to share the contents in print form.

The topic: Top 5 Songs of 2009 (as of August 2009)
  1. Mastodon "The Last Baron" (Crack The Skye)
  2. Clutch "Motherless Child" (Strange Cousins From The West)
  3. The Mars Volta "Teflon" (Octahedron)
  4. Kylesa "Scapegoat" (Static Tensions)
  5. Isis "Hand Of The Host" (Wavering Radiant)
Isis actually turned out to be a strange choice because in all honesty, I don't love "Wavering Radiant" in the manner I thought I might. Despite this, "Hand Of The Host" stands as a great example of how I feel Isis has broken free of any comparisons that once dogged them. They've developed a niche all their own, blending dense heaviness with their progressive meanderings.

I'm still getting familiar with Kylesa. "Static Tensions" is the first recording I've owned so it's hard to chart their growth as a band. Kylesa has a good, solid combination of sludgy metal with a driving punk rock energy, almost akin to Black Flag by way of EyeHateGod. As far as lead off album tracks, not many kick start an album like "Scapegoat".

The Mars Volta have been a favorite of mine since I first heard "De-loused In The Comatorium". With such heavy output in such a short amount of time, I was beginning to wonder if impatience would ever catch up to their ambition. Though "Octahedron" grows on me, I have noticed that the same punch of prior outings is lacking. Still "Teflon" bears a very solid, mid-tempo rhythm that locks in and never lets go.

Much like The Mars Volta, I love Clutch in a way that I do almost no other band. I could be considered an apologist of sorts. With "Strange Cousins From The West" coming out, I was curious how the exclusion of Mick Schauer would strip them of the depth of the last 3 albums. Being an apologist, I think not so much. Having a feel of being caught between "The Elephant Riders" and "Robot Hive/Exodus", the first track "Motherless Child" is a trademark Clutch anthem, complete with infectuous riffs and Neal Fallon's bizarre lyrical spewings.

My favorite track of 2009 (and not likely to change) is "The Last Baron" from Mastodon. What Mastodon appears to be doing (and quite well) is combining catchy, rhythmic songwriting with stellar musicianship and technical wizardry. For me, "The Last Baron" is the closest any band has come to creating a modern answer to King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man".

There is my resultant podcast in a nutshell, albeit stripped of audio. Not entirely a bad thing actually as my voice recorded is akin to Bobcat Goldwait being attacked by a gang of squirrels.
