In Defense Of Defend
defend |diˈfend|
verb [ trans. ]
resist an attack made on (someone or something); protect from harm or danger : we shall defend our country, whatever the cost.
I post this definition as somewhat of a clarification of the term. Moreover, I post it in relation to current events as I've viewed them in recent weeks, months and years. Friday night, I was watching Anderson Cooper 360 and there was a piece on Afghanistan in lieu of the 8th year since 9/11. Without launching into a rant about war, the military-industrial complex and so on, I post this definition as a reminder that in reality, defending America militarily seems to be an oxymoron. In order for America to be in need of physical defense, I think something of an actual physical enemy offensive running down suburban streets need be in order. It just seems like either a lazy use of the word defend or a planned use of language to nullify the populace by repetition. Eat…sleep…defend. Lather…rinse…repeat.
