...having a sizable and growing collection of strategy/European board games, I often find a combination of time constraints and total laziness to be the prevention from my learning every game in my current arsenal. Depending on the game, the instruction manuals range from wordy to encylopedic. While it took me a matter of minutes to learn and understand Carcassonne, a monster of a game (no pun intended) such as Arkham Horror has my eyes welling up with tears of sadness in just considering trying to puzzle it out for gameplay.
As one who likes to play soon after purchase, I often will look to YouTube to find instructional videos from users with experience. In these searches, I have found a treasure trove of board game channels that review, discuss and instruct viewers on new games. YouTube alone has provided me with a few gaming suggestions going forward. But when it comes to videos that can condense that mechanics of a more intensive board game, they are hard to come by. While there are a number of channels dedicated to showing new players the ropes, the creator(s) often like to plug the time that they crushed their goldfish in a heated game of Warhammer 40,000.
This got my gears turning a bit. One reason that I believe that games such as Agricola or Trajan have yet to arrive in front of more buying eyes is limited accessibility. The other reason is that the instruction booklets tend to be very in-depth and lengthy, making for some homework before a first run-through can even be attempted. As I have stated, the videos I have run across on YouTube often leave much to be desired.
Given this, I think I might attempt to put together a YouTube channel that will focus on creating gaming content with the new user in mind, at least in the beginning. While it is known that I tend to take forever with projects of my own passion, I have heavy interest in these types of games and have watched a few people walk away from the table confused or disinterested in future playthrough due to lax instruction. Time will tell if I actually undertake this scheme but if I do, it will be posted here and elsewhere.
