Dracula With Lasik Eye Surgery
If someone would have asked me three days ago, I would have stated that Crack The Skye was the best album of 2009. Even with Clutch's latest album and 4 months left of the year, I was ready to crown Mastodon king. No longer. After waiting nearly 6 years, Burnt By The Sun finally released Heart Of Darkness.Apparently, this is it for the men of Jersey. For what reason I do not know, Burnt By The Sun is gone once this album has run it's course. Listening to what they've created though, it's difficult to understand why. Heart Of Darkness is a musical destructo'force.
They were, in my opinion, unjustly compared to Coalesce in the beginning. Coalesce was NEVER this good. Not even close. Here with this latest release, Burnt By The Sun sounds much like the band they began as, but knowing that they are leaving this Earth makes me realize what a void they will be leaving behind.
Heart Of Darkness combines the best elements of punk/hardcore with metal, noise, prog and so forth without long-winded songs or over-wrought technicality. Humorously, I would describe this album as the culmination of every shark attack ever to have occurred combined with a full blown zombie outbreak in hyper-speed.
I feel that I can say this now without recourse or retraction. Heart Of Darkness is the finest recording by anyone in 2009. It's better than Crack The Skye and anything else out there. It would take a cataclysmic event from beyond the stars to top this bad Larry. It's quick and to-the-point, brutal as anything by anyone and leaves no stone unturned. All other bands......don't bother.
